Merle Jacobs passed away April 9, 2007

I recently posted a tribute to Merle Jacobs on my blog. I encourage you to peek into that. Little did I know that I would be reporting his death. He was a person who served God and his generation with distinction.

MERLE E. JACOBS

Merle E. Jacobs, Goshen College Research Professor of Biology in Goshen, Indiana, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Wooster Community Hospital. He resided at Smithville, Ohio, since 2001.

He was born November 30,1918, at Johnstown, PA, to Paul and Trella Risch Jacobs. He married Elizabeth Beyeler on June 7, 1959. .

He graduated from Johnstown High School in 1935. After serving in Civilian Public Service at Jasper Pulaski Game Preserve near Medaryville,Indiana, and at Howard, Rhode I sland, he graduated from Goshen College in1948 with a BA in biology.

He received his PhD degree in Zoology, Eigenmann Fellow, from Indiana University in 1953 after which he did postdoctoral studies and teaching at Duke University from 1954 until 1957. He then taught at Bethany College ,WVA (1957-1961), Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, VA (1961 –1964), and at Goshen College, IN (1964- 1986). During this timespan of thirty years, he was also doing research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health in the area of biochemical genetics which had implications for aging and other health related issue students helped with research as he received grants from the National Institutes Of Health.

His research began as he studied the relationships between living things such as insects, birds, fish and the natural world . He was an avid researcher in animal behavior. With the help of his video photography, he spent many years teaching in environmental education, both in the community and in camp settings. He always had a deep concern for the wise use and connservation of our natural resources. The objective of his research for the National Institutes of Health and for environmental education was to help promote quality of life for all living things.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; four sisters, Twila Armstrong and Dorothea (Bradly)Otto of Davidsville, PA; Erma Wentz of Somerset, PA; Roma (John) Ruth of Harleysville,PA; and four brothers, Dwight Jacobs of Arcaria,Fl.; Arnold (Mary Lou) Jacobs, Colorado Springs,CO; Duane (Phyllis) Jacobs of Burlington, NC, and Donald (Anna Ruth) Jacobs of Lancaster,PA. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard and Gerald Jacobs.
